Election night is always exhilarating, and on Tuesday, 13,482 citizens of our municipality exercised our democratic right to choose a representative for the City Council. As the results began to emerge late that night, it was a deeply humbling experience to realise that so many of you have entrusted us to represent your views in the municipality of Tórshavn – with 1,008 votes for me personally, and 3,429 votes collectively for our party, Tjóðveldi. In the early hours of Thursday, we signed a coalition agreement with the parties Javnaðarflokkurin and…

Over the past four years, the municipality of Tórshavn has completed projects worth nearly 400 million DKK without any public tendering process. Furthermore, countless other projects have been tendered with unnecessarily strict criteria that only two companies could realistically meet, even though other companies could certainly have submitted suitable and competitive bids if given the chance. This approach is neither a sensible business policy nor a sound financial policy. To maintain a diverse business environment and make the most of our taxpayers’ money, the municipality of Tórshavn needs to reconsider…

While several candidates are making grand promises to the public about diverse housing options, the discussions behind closed doors tell a different story. Plans were in motion to build cooperative apartments on municipal land on Villingardalsvegurin, but this project has been put on hold in favour of constructing private apartments. This is unacceptable, and we must push to stick to the original plan for cooperative apartments when the issue is raised at the next City Council meeting. We urgently need more public and varied housing options. Apartment cooperatives are an…

The vibrant arts and cultural scene in the municipality of Tórshavn thrives on the passion and dedication of its creative champions. As the capital municipality, we should lead the way in supporting this essential environment to ensure that art and culture continue to flourish, evolve, and reflect the diversity of our surroundings. Art and culture are vital for social connection and community well-being. Art allows us to envision ideas that can be hard to express or discuss. It moves us to tears, laughter, and deep reflection. Every penny invested in…

One of the biggest challenges in the municipality of Tórshavn is the housing shortage. We want to live here, yet we lack the options to do so. To ease the immense demand for housing in Tórshavn, we urgently need to build more rental and owner-occupied apartments. However, the shortage is too severe to rely solely on new construction. We must also consider bringing empty buildings and houses into use, as these could provide shelter for multiple families in urgent need. We need innovative solutions to provide housing across the municipality,…

I do think so. It should be simple and convenient to recycle glass bottles and jars, metal and household items that we can save from going to waste. Recycling stations like the one in the picture are common in most residential areas in our neighbouring countries. And they work! The members of Tjóðveldi were delighted when the Committee on Nature and Environmental Affairs was tasked with testing three recycling stations across the municipality of Tórshavn. But the joy was short-lived. After four years and countless discussions, there is still no…
