The vibrant arts and cultural scene in the municipality of Tórshavn thrives on the passion and dedication of its creative champions.
As the capital municipality, we should lead the way in supporting this essential environment to ensure that art and culture continue to flourish, evolve, and reflect the diversity of our surroundings.
Art and culture are vital for social connection and community well-being. Art allows us to envision ideas that can be hard to express or discuss. It moves us to tears, laughter, and deep reflection. Every penny invested in the arts and culture in Tórshavn is returned many times over.
Supporting our cultural heritage and future means supporting our language, too, by increasing access to relevant Faroese language resources. Although a city map was created in 2007, there is now a pressing need to develop a plan to preserve Tórshavn’s cultural heritage, for example, through architectural conservation and maintaining the spirit of historic neighbourhoods.
Therefore, we should:
- Ensure that the Music School’s facilities meet essential building standards and expand its programme to allow more students to learn an instrument.
- Establish a City Museum for permanent and temporary exhibitions, showcasing local history and contemporary art.
- Secure more studios and improve current working conditions for musicians and artists.
- Develop a new Policy on Arts and Culture, including resolving plans to build a National Theatre.
- Introduce more public art to strengthen connections between young artists and contemporary society.
- Increase support for the City Library, the Aquarium, and the National Gallery.
