Election night is always exhilarating, and on Tuesday, 13,482 citizens of our municipality exercised our democratic right to choose a representative for the City Council. As the results began to emerge late that night, it was a deeply humbling experience to realise that so many of you have entrusted us to represent your views in the municipality of Tórshavn – with 1,008 votes for me personally, and 3,429 votes collectively for our party, Tjóðveldi.

In the early hours of Thursday, we signed a coalition agreement with the parties Javnaðarflokkurin and Borgaralistin to form a majority in the municipality of Tórshavn from January 1st, 2025, to December 31st, 2029.

Politics is a cooperative process, and the coalition agreement reflects the shared values and ambitions of the municipality of Tórshavn. The three main priorities for the Tórshavn City Council over the next four years will be housing, childcare and elderly care, and the environment.

The Tórshavn City Council and Committee Representatives

The majority coalition will also chair the various committees of the municipality. These elected representatives will lead the Tórshavn City Council and committees over the next four years:

• Elsa Berg from Tjóðveldi will be mayor and will therefore automatically chair the finance committee.

• Heðin Mortensen from Javnaðarflokkurin will be vice-mayor and will chair the port committee and the committee on industrial affairs.

• Anja Weyhe from Tjóðveldi will chair the construction and city planning committee.

• Heidi Lava Elgeirsdóttir from Tjóðveldi will chair the committee on cultural affairs.

• Annita á Fríðriksmørk from Tjóðveldi will chair the wellbeing committee, which includes lunch programmes for childcare facilities.

• Bergur Dam Jensen from Javnaðarflokkurin will chair the technical committee.

• Kristianna Winther Poulsen from Javnaðarflokkurin will chair the committee on nature and environment and the committee on health and senior citizens, which includes integration affairs.

• Guttorm í Skála from Borgaralistin will serve as vice-chair for the finance committee, the port committee, and the committee on nature and environment.

Community Efforts Strengthen Political Results

Politics is a living forum that allows citizens to influence decisions that shape our lives, and the foremost task of politicians is to represent the citizens of our constituencies. I therefore invite all of you to continue voicing your ideas and concerns, to organise in unions, to be active in your local communities, and to build our society together.

I am grateful, humbled, and ready to serve as your mayor for the next four years, striving to foster an environment across our cities, villages, and surroundings, where each of us can live, thrive, and realise our potential.

Elsa Berg, mayor-elect of Tórshavn City Council
